I like Air Gear for the comedy, badass action, and the school to make it feel like real life. I guess Katekyo Hitman Reborn was like that and Code Geass too.
Anyways heres what ive already watched and enjoyed them all in their own way.

You need to watch Full Metal Panic. It is the perfect combination of comedy, mecha, military and school. It has three runs and you need to watch them in this order: 1. Full Metal Panic! 2. Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu 3. Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid.
Definitely agreed with Tader - FMP is probably my number 2 anime, hot damn its awesome! Anyway, I always try and point people in the direction of Sora no Otoshimono (Heavens Lost property) Ive never seen anything quite as amazing! It might not appear good at first glance (especially if you look it up first) but trust a stranger, its worth every minute of your time!
Hajime No Ippo gets respect! If you want some sports, I would either roll with Slam Dunk or Eyeshield 21. Eyeshield 21 is very easy to get into and the over-exaggeration of football will grow on you.
