So this year I'm planning to go to the Scotland MCM Expo in September, but I don't know what to cosplay. My parents said that for my 18th, I could maybe go to Japan, and so I'm putting as much money towards that as I can so it can happen. Anyone have any suggestions for any affordable cosplay you think I could pull off? Or should I just go casual? What do you do cosplay-wise when you're strapped for cash?

Any yukata cos-play is actually viable & a good investment. Plus it will let them know that you are interested in their culture. Men also find them quite attractive XD!
There's a lot of characters that wore a yukata since there are episodes on a summer setting where they go to festivals wearing them ^_-.

The cheapest and easiest would probably be a cross-play of L from Deathnote.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll have a think about it, should be able to figure out something that's cheap but still looks good. I've considered making my own but I'm usually so lazy, I've done it before but I'll be super busy by the time the convention rolls around ^_^;

Kigurumi "disguise pajamas". You can even buy one in Japan. If the weather is cool enough, just toss one on. If you do decide to do a kigurumi, make sure to accessorize with maybe a fun colorful bag, necklace, bracelets etc.
