isn't it awfully temping to say numerous Japanese phrases you would hear in the dinner scenes in anime but you stay quiet due to the fact that you worry about sounding like smartass?

I get that same feeling, like just wanting to say "Itadakimasu" before you eat but staying quiet.
I just feel like I'd get weird looks

I grew up speaking a lot around the house with my mother so when I see a kid kind of weebing out I find it a little annoying but I don't try to be judgmental or rude about it.
However if it makes you happy then go ahead and do it, but please don't overuse broken japanese because it comes off as disrespectful.

I'm with toe on this one.
I have a friend that will say "Irrashaimase." when he walks into a Korean restaurant. I wanted to smack him, but I have a sense of humor. I try to think of it in a different way as I am a language learner, as is he. So... I feel like... if it helps him learn, and he's having fun then it's not hurting anyone and he will come to realize how ridiculous he looks doing that eventually. No guarantees on whether he'll cease though, he might find it encouraging.
