Hey there! I'm not quite sure, last time I watched it was a long time ago and I didn't think it was that amazing. I think people really like the characters though, and it's quite an old series, so it was likely the first for a lot of people too. Because of that, it's often what people recommend to get into anime too, from what I've seen.
