Oh nice, childcare is always something good to get in to. My mom used to do assisted living for elderly people during the week. You can always hear some awesome stories from older folk.

You shouldn't let him get to you so much, whether he means to kill himself or not, you aren't responsible for his emotional problems or actions. He has demonstrated extreme abusive tendencies and you aren't required to deal with that just because he claims to want to change. That type of behavior pattern is also common in men who beat their gf's and wives. In reality, they rarely change. Just ignore him, protect your own well being.
