A model of the USS Maine at the History Museum in Key West. It was sank in February 1898 outside of Havana Harbor due to a sudden explosion in the middle of the night. While President McKinley urged people not to jump to conclusions, William Randolph Hurst and the others in the Yellow Press immediately blamed Spain, thus the Spanish-American War of 1898 was fought with the US taking several possessions of the Spanish Empire and helped secure the independence of Cuba. Years later, the cause of explosion was determined to be accidental munitions explosion aboard the ship.
