I never heard about the 72 virgins thing until Islamic radicalism became more mainstream. Granted I wasn't raised religiously my dad was pretty much an atheist and my mom didn't practice. Though a non muslim friend told me, he enjoys reading theology, the 72 virgins is descriptive of the euphoria and satisfaction in Heaven. Same with the description that it has fruits that don't exist but taste better than all fruits you've had. Think the message got skewed in the media and radicalism using it to recruit followers.
