What is Your definition of "Love"

feydikan
Observant note: Funny how the majority of the comments so far are men... @Amezuki - +1, fantastic man. @Reaeryn - Also +1 @M-M - damn... someone broke out altruism. Have you been reading or studying the Price equation? Blah... but it does purpose an answer the question even it does so in a cold hard scientific type of way....lol @maverick / mroneill100 - a good example of what I was trying to 'elude' with in this discussion. "love" being used to quantify the value of "love". Yes, it means many things, and it can be subdivided ad nauseum, but most of what you have written can be found in any song lyric, or cheap greeting card. You should read the Post Amezuki linked to.... nudge nudge. @xingthecrow - DAMN YOU SCIENCE! It's called Oxytocin btw, but lets keep to the mythical representation of love rather then the hard line biological aspects of it...rofl. @Scooby - Original ideas only sweetheart....rofl

Someone you are close with and like of course but to me it's got to have that plus a person that can spend time with you not doing anything and still enjoy that time just that

Love takes on many forms. As most of us know, you can love your dog, you can love your mom, and you can love your partner. However, most of the times, these are different types of love.
I won't get into much details but I am going to guess that you are referring to romantic love.
To high schoolers, this usually means having the one you love always in your thoughts, you can barely sleep at night, and your chest tightens whenever you see them. However, I will be the first to bring that person back down to earth and tell them that what they are experiencing is infatuation. It may be one of the first stages of "love" like the whole "honey moon stage" however, it won't stay like that forever.
Honestly, I am not sure if there is such a thing a true love because this love is such a new concept. Marrying for love and not financial security and keeping the family name going is very very new.
However, my idea of loving someone is when I decide that I want that person to be by me. People say stuff like, "I need you. I can't live without you. I love you so much, I would do anything for you." Honestly, that is not appealing nor attractive. Love is when you are not afraid of anything and when you find that person, they are your partner in crime. Or at least that is how I look at it.

While I think there is value in understanding the chemical and bioelectrical basis for various emotions including human desire and affection... I think most scientific and structured psychological analyses fail to take into account one important fact: Feelings are real to whoever is feeling them at that time, regardless of their source. They are real, and so is the effect they have on people's motivations and state of mind.

I was just about to explain how oxytocin works. However i dont see it as necessary now. let me just say that the hard line biological explanation of love does not at all cheapen love or destroy the romanticized version of it that we think of. It in fact compliments it by making it clear to anyone that understands it that all you need to do is show you love them. No need for games or any bullshit, just show them you love them. @Amezuki The scientific community never said these feelings aren't real. They merely described how it worked.

Actually screw it ill describe it anyway. Since its dead simple too. Whenever you see someone whos similar to you, someone do something you like, someone act in a way that you like oxytocin floods your brain and you feel like you're connected to them. Classical Pavlovian conditioning kicks in and you get used to feeling this way each time you see this person as well as oxytocin flooding your brain at the same time. Every single romantic action you can think of just reinforces feelings of love using the the exact same mechanism i just described. Wanting to compromise, care for, compliment, cuddle with , and all manner of actions with someone is directly controlled by this chemical. HOWEVER this DOES NOT ,LET ME REPERAT, DOES NOT make love cheap or unreal. It simply describes how it works. http://www.chemicalbook.com/CAS%5CGIF%5C14317-68-1.gif

Love is a feeling and a idea. It is a strong attraction to something favorable as well as a attracton to people who value similar things to us. It is strong care for those we find important and a way for us to eradicate the fear of being alone. It controls us and is controlled byus. We can fake t and can not notice it when it s real. Its misused, mistreated, and overly abundant. Thats what it means now. What i wish it would mean is strong unbreakable care for life (or what is left of it)and someone who you can spend time doing nothing with and still enjoy being with them.

Love is the feeling that you can't exist without that other person, the very sight of them brings you joy, you want to wipe away all of their tears and spend every waking moment with them. You want to share their joys and sorrows, their ups and downs and your life with them. Love is something amazing and true love is extremely rare in this world.
