Now that I think about it I am asking a general question open to anybody who is employed. I should probably get that out of the way if I want my parents to stop breathing down my neck.

Finding your first job is rough. I worked at Arby's as my first job for about 5 months then moved on to a superviser job for a temp agency. I currently work waste water treatment, I've been in the field for over a year now. No job experience = gg no rematch. My suggestion is go out apply and follow up on applications or resume's. smile a lot! Say yes mam and no sir. If that fails part time volunteer somewhere and label it as job experience.

@kyetge! I got into my job kinda through photography cause I used to do concert photography. Then I wondered what all those people did on the other side of the big boards with the switches and knobs so I learned how to mix and now I'm a sound engineer by trade :p Getting to where I am is really the same as any job when you boil it down. Network like crazy in your field. Ask questions, be memorable (in a good way!). I think it's worth it even if my parents don't think it's a stable career. But I'm going back to school for medical stuff because of various reasons. 1)Freelancing is not a stable career 2)live sound is tiring, backbreaking (sometimes literally) work 3)with the higher steady salary, i can buy more plugins and microphones! And 4) it'll get my folks off my back :p But I don't regret it.
