Because Humans in general are annoying as fuck sometimes. Cockroaches at least make for pleasant company. Besides, should they evolve and take over the world, wouldn't you want to be on the winning side? Also, they don't bark or meow in your face like other pets do, and they are generally capable of taking care of themselves. ^^ Very economical.
