Crunchyroll Class Action Settlement

If you are a Person in the United States who, from September 8, 2020 through September 20, 2023, (1) was a registered user of an online website, mobile app, or any video-on-demand service or app owned, controlled, and/or operated by Crunchyroll; and (2) viewed videos on an online website, mobile app, or any video-on-demand service or app owned, controlled, and/or operated by Crunchyroll. • Persons included in the Settlement will be eligible to receive a pro rata (meaning equal) portion of the Settlement Fund, which Class Counsel anticipates to be approximately $30.00, but the exact amount is not yet known and could be more or less. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Received an email about the Settlement. To file a claim you need a "Class Member ID" which is contained in the email associated to your Crunchyroll Account. Was worried it was a scam but looked up the Settlement information. It falls under Beltran v. Sony.

The class action lawsuit was brought against Crunchyroll in 2022, and alleged that Crunchyroll was in violation of the Video Privacy Protection Act. It claims that Crunchyroll disclosed, without subscribers’ consent, personally identifiable information to Facebook and some other third parties. Crunchyroll denied any wrongdoing in the case, and says it did not violate any law, but agreed to settle “to avoid the uncertainties and expenses with continuing the case.” Basically, Crunchyroll thinks that paying out now is probably going to be cheaper than paying for lawyers in a long, expensive court case, where it may lose and have to pay out anyway.
