Great pretender feels like a live action drama and it's good, Characters and plot twists are good.

Probably the remakes of old 60s-70s anime from her youth. Haikara Tooru-san, Young Black Jack, Osomatsu-san (though not sure due to how different it is from the old one...)

Try either "Zeno" or "Devilman: Crybaby". The first one is about a missionary in Japan. The second one is the only anime my mother liked so much she watched it 'till the end.
