yeah crying children really catch your attention because, well, preservation of our species type answers although it should activate the parental parts of our brain, not anger xD (although it is very grinding) i think the problem is "selfishness" is a very loaded word everything we do is selfish because the only perspective we have is our own thats why we have things like empathy to keep our selfishness in check. otherwise we end up like sociopaths afterall, we would we do something if it didnt benefit us in some way? why logically would a mother give her life to protect her child if she didnt get some satisfaction out of it? selfishness isnt a bad thing, it drives us to do good things. after all, everything we do is in our own self interest.

empathy literally comes down to "i wouldnt want that to happen to me." and "i want to help that person because if that happened to me, i would want someone to help." even empathy is self centered

why is it awful though? like lets say that a group of people is beating another person you know is innocent why would you want them to stop?

but why? isnt the answer "because its unjust?" empathy is putting yourself in the persons shoes "if that were me i would want someone to help" and so you become that person who helps
