"Hmhm..." chuckled the stout doctor. "Now, now! Yes it hurts, but you're a young lad! You'll bounce back to climbing trees in no time, hoho!"
The boy's mother quips back, "He better not! I told him to stop being so reckless unsupervised, yet he wouldn't listen and this is what happened!"
Coming to her son's defense thereafter was none other than the father.
"Aww shucks, Sarah, Zeke's just imitating his dear old dad. He watches me work alongside the other men cutting trees all the time. I think our son's gonna make an excellent logger when he comes of age! Also it's normal for kids his age to take risks. It's how I learned back then and I got plenty of cuts and bruises too."
"Don't encourage our only son, Jerome. Next time he might crack his skull upon a rock when falling and then what? If you want to teach him how to climb safely then be there to watch him will you!"
"You know I work long hours. I can't be there looking after him 24/7!"
"Well I have house work to do, so I can't either. I suppose you're just gonna have to have a talk with Zeke about this when we get home."

Sarah and Jerome argued for a few minutes until the doctor interrupted with a smile.
"If I could interject, my wife should be almost done preparing the medicine for Zeke's pain. Once she's administered his first dose she'll give you the rest for his recovery at home. It should only take a couple months for the bone to heal fully, so keep Zeke from lifting or climbing with that arm till then."
About the time Winsloe finished his sentence a good sized woman came from a backroom with medicine for Zeke.
With a friendly tone Winsloe's wife complimented Zeke for being a brave boy. She also offered him a snack to take his mind off the pain, but it was also a ploy to get the kid to properly swallow the bitter tasting pain killer.
"What a wonderful young lad you are! So well behaved and brave!"
She pats his hair gently while looking over to Sarah with a reassuring expression. Zeke's mom is practically glowing at having her son complimented by another person. She's the type of woman to fish for flattery about her family as well as herself.

With that Zeke and his parents made their way out of Winsloe's medical cabin. As for Felrein who had been sitting in a chair by the window the entire exchange he was slumped over from exhaustion. Still having not had proper medical attention nor nutrition his condition was worsening into a cold fever.
Taking notice Winsloe's wife hurried over to check on the young man.
"Dear, what happened to you? You look like you've been in an accident!"
With the help of her husband as well as Edgar they carried Felrein over to a table to better assess his injuries.

Removing Felrein's shirt the doctor thoroughly examined the bruises as well as cuts to determine how severe the man's condition was.
"This most certainly does not look easy to treat. I would reckon he's suffered multiple broken ribs. I may have to surgically cut around the area just to get a better look."
Felrein winced hearing the words. He had no idea how good this doctor was at surgery and given most in his area were not highly successful made him genuinely fearful of being opened up.
"Listen good boy, I can tell we need to act quickly or else this may become much worse. You're going to have to trust that I can at the very least reset those bones so you'll be in less pain. Can you place your faith in me?"
As the pain was growing more unbearable and his vision was slowly blurring Felrein finally asked Winsloe to go ahead. The doctor's wife prepared a homemade pain medicine to numb him. Edgar was roped in to help hold him down as Winsloe got to work opening the areas of his chest that were the most sensitive. The surgery would go on for the whole rest of the day in excruciating agony to the point Felrein blacked out even with the medicine.

Around late evening sometime before midnight Felrein regained consciousness. Finding himself resting in a bed on the other side of the cabin. Curtains were drawn shut, but he could hear the floorboards creak with occasional footsteps.
Looking down at the bandages around his torso he could tell extensive work had been done treating his injuries. It was difficult to breathe at times feeling a deep burning sensation each time the flesh expanded and contracted. Even leaning upright was near impossible in his current state.
Weakly he called out for Winsloe. Not long did it take for the curtain to be pulled back revealing the doctor's wife with some clean water and additional medicine.
"It's a relief seeing you awake again, dear! My husband and I worried you were well on your way out of this life, but here you lay fully awake! Tell me what I can get to help with your recovery, young man."
