you cant no, but i believe hearts allow you to gain perks, like a <3 under your profile picture and being allowed to comment on comments (could be wrong, not sure)

you gain one every time your active on the site

You get the heart icon below your profile picture at 5000 hearts. Other than that, they do not serve a purpose yet.
