@mountain_tiger Depends on the larp. I generally shop online, but I got into larp through cosplay, and my main cosplay character is my D&D ranger. So lucky me, I never had to build my outfit all at once! Which means over the course of several years, I was able to gradually make sink about 1.5 k into it. Larps don't necessarily require that amount of investment for first timers, and I recommend just having a base outfit and adding onto it between each events if you're low income like me. When it comes to my weaponry, I usually get it here, since all of my weapon crafting attempts turn into unwieldy abominations. https://www.epicarmouryunlimited.com/collections/foam-weapons But if that is understandably outside of your price range, here's how you go about crafting your own. Always make sure you review the rules of a larp you intend to join, because different groups have different rules. Different lengths and weapon size or safety requirements, all that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ8w2t_l0wY Armor wise, if you have real armor, go ahead and use real armor. If its not made of real steel or leather, (Like if its polyurethane or plastic) then it's called "Improvised plate". Which means something like this will get you through just fine for a first event if you absolutely need the armor bonus. But if your larp requires actual steel and leather, get ready to invest. https://www.epicarmoury.com/metal-works/complete-sets/mercenary-armour-set/c-297/p-27112/

@chocopyro Ah, thank you for the links. It's good to hear this kind of thing can be done on a budget, it seems like quite the interesting hobby. The magic system seems a little over my head at a glance. I'm relatively ignorant to the world of LARP, is it generally based on D&D or fantasy media I can look to for understanding the world's magic and technology? I think if I decide to delve into this hobby I'd like to use black powder weapons like muskets. o7

@mountain_tiger Actually, hold on, I've seen a video for a larp kind of like that. Keep in mind, if steam punk isn't your thing, pirate larps are also quite common. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laNOeA8hePU Again though, that's very much dependent on the system or type of larp you are getting into. There are steam punk and pirate larps out there. As well as scifi, post apocalyptic, and western. Then you have the World of Darkness larps that are completely non-combat base, and more about the machiavellian politics of vampire society and stuff like that. It's not really something that's standardized. There are larps that are wide spread, and may have chapters in each state. Nero is an example. And their lore is pretty consistent, but there's also a lot of ones that are much more self contained. That tends to be the ones where you find the pirate/steampunk/early modern period stuff. I've actually only done fantasy larps, so I couldn't tell you what the other types are like. But there's all kinds of videos online.

@chocopyro I see, thanks for indulging me a bit on the topic. It's a shame the pandemic had come, no cons or LARP in the foreseeable future it seems. Perhaps VR will be a solution for it, but I can't help feeling that doing it live would be a completely different experience. <( _ _ )>
