If not the protagonist.. then the next best character i would prefer any day is the Antagonist. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/xZdaNsLVQuA/maxresdefault.jpg and by antagonist i actually mean an antagonist, not a mix of antagonist and protagonist..

I would go as an anti-hero that would support the protagonist at some times, but also go against em due to a difference of interest and morals~

The 3rd or 4th supporting character to be introduced, usually. I'm the guy who has that talent or obscure knowledge that the protagonist and party needs to tackle a problem. Then I just never go away, unless I'm introduced before episode 3.

The friend that's always there, but will help behind the protagonists back, whether through noble or dirty means. That would do well under pressure, but can go off at anytime. Something like Killua comes to mind

Depends on the genre. If we're talking tragedy, then I'd be the force that brings down the hero, if it were a hero or fantasy story, I'd be the villian who used to be good. If it was romance, I'd be the one that the main love interest rejected. Etc.
