New into design

If the first image is yours and the second is what you used as source material then it looks like you might have trouble with scale. In the second image the character is 3/4 body where as in yours its around half. A good way to make sure you can fit everything is to make a really loose sketch. A circle for the head, a rectangle for the body a \/ shape triangle for the crotch area followed by cylinders for legs. This will provide a really basic form for a guideline. Then i'd recommend using Sai or Photoshop, maybe even mangastudio, in which you can create a new layer, lower the Opacity of your Sketch layer and this will allow you to work on top of the guideline without having to erase. Using an art package like Sai or Photoshop will also allow your tablet to use its pressure features, allowing for much smoother lines. Try to note the general shape of things, in image 1 the hair on the left side doesnt have symetry like it does in image 2, on image 1 the right bangs flow down past her ears. This isnt the case in image 2. Also the speed in which lines are created can change how they look,if you dash in a line quickly its usually much cleaner than a slowly drawn line, but much harder to control, get used to using ctrl+Z which is the shortcut for undo. His advice is correct, is because some of us are beginners so we need the help of photoshop, or even illustrator to use our tablets or even use the mouse to make our first art work. Once you get the hang of what it feels to use a tablet you can use anything you want afterwards.
