Thoughts on Fan Service

Fanservice is like a cake. Add nothing but sugar and only those desperate for sugar will eat it up like they're starving. All others will be overwhelmed and lose interest. But, if you use just the right ingredients, serve it up in the correct way, and once in a while deprive the consumer of said cake, they will ALWAYS love it and want more. It's just unfortunate that I'm desperate for sugar. >->

for me fan service is pleasant but It's like an accessory. it's gotta be worn with other things. JUST fan service with nothing else is boring. I'll watch hentai if i want something like that. however i've never said "i dont like this anime cuz too much fan service" as long as theres enough substantive stuff as well, like comedy, drama, romance, action, etc. then I dont think there is such a thing as too much fan service. for example 2 similar series Freezing and Queen's Blade. I actually liked Freezing because even though it had a LOT of fan service, It had enough other stuff to hold my interest. but I was bored out of my mind by Queen's Blade. it seemed like nothing ever happened. people fought but nothing happened. and the fights were dull.

I feel like fan service is fine as long as it is in moderation, or fairly minute. I don't particularly care for fan service, I personally watch anime for plot, philosophy, culture, entertainment, escape, and different perspectives on reality. I think the main reason it exists, is because it helps an anime gain popularity, which in turn helps an anime that people would normally classify as boring, gain some success. The reason why I think it increases it´s popularity , is that I don't think that most people watch anime for the reasons I watch it for. The vast majority of people, in my opinion watch anime for excitement, and fanservice. The thing that has been bothering me about fanservice, recently, is that I am starting see more, and more anime that their primary selling point is fanservice, because it sells. Fanservice in my opinion, should not be the primary selling point of an anime, and I feel fanservice, is causing the qaulity of anime itself to deteriorate, because animation companies stop relying so much on story, character development, and creative ideas in general, because it sells well. It seems to me in the last few years, I find it gradually a little bit harder and harder to find, anime that I consider to be of "good quality." I don't know, maybe I am just getting more, and more picky, but I have gone back, and watched an anime, I watched in the past that I considered decent, and I compared it to all the animes of the current season, and it blew them out of the water. I personally think that fanservice should only be used to help an anime, that already has a good plot, and character development, to gain popularity. I think it shouldn't be used excessively, or as the key selling point, because all anime will then ever be about is fanservice, I think anime can be creative, and enertaining without the use of fanservice. This is all I have to say on the matter, but take what you will from it.

I love the idea of it but now a days it's just about flashing pantys every other scene it's not how it used to be it's a good addition if that's what the shows about but when a shows a complete different genre then it gets kinda annoying like I personally enjoy fan service based show like kejio but get annoyed when shows are just keep throwing in there

I like Fan Service. I have to admit I am one of those people who does like to indulge. I'm like you OP, indifferent but excessiveness annoys me, especially if it hinders the plot (if it has one), though if the anime has no plot or is based on fan service, then put in go all out. My mind is blanking right now on anime that does it right, but I've not had enough caffeine yet to think properly, so I feel I'm going to have to revisit this thread with a list.

As long as its not over done and doesn't take away too much from the immersion I'm fine with it.
