There were blades that were actually stronger than Japanese blades first discovered in Syria. Damascus steel is an imitation of those blades. We still don't know exactly how they were made. Look up on Google Damascus steel nanotubes, I think you will find it very interesting. That aside i agree that fencing is much more for show than, actual combat. I agree more with the kendo style of sword fighting, which is basically what Kumdo is, it is just the Korean variant.
