Me? 5 or 6 years. Other people? Considerably less or more time. Depends how much you put in.

I'm no master in any regard. But to build some skill will take a few years. Though if you "no life" it then you can easily do it in less time. The biggest factor is time put in, just like anything else. And honestly you can learn a song pretty well in even less time. Also as a very general tip to you, there is more than one way to play any given song. There are simplified versions that work great for learning and then more advanced versions to match your skill. So never get discouraged!

I only made it through one lesson before I quit. I just couldn't learn that way. Music theory or whatever isn't what I wanted to learn about. I'm more of a do it by sound type.

I actually bought a hybrid acoustic electric guitar a couple years ago, got it off of ebay, it came with rocksmith 2014, a game that you can play and hook up to most consoles with the real tone cable, though i recommend the PC version since you can get custom songs on it more easily, and i did take a guitar class for a short while, learned some basic stuff like chords and how to use the tuner the guitar came with, and a song from that class, although i didnt really like the class, i would much rather learn on my own, i also recommend using elixir guitar strings if you choose an acoustic one, and even though I've had the guitar for like 2 years or something, i haven't really started to play it until a year ago, so im not an expert whatsoever, but from my experience, rocksmith makes it more fun to play the guitar and keeps track of how well you can play a song, so you can constantly try to surpass yourself, and i wouldn't recommend buying such an expensive guitar yet, my dad bought a used one for my younger brother a while back, he even took the guitar classes with me, but he doesn't really play on it, as far as i know but as others have stated here, i would recommend talking to someone that works at the guitar store, whenever i have a question, they always help me out I highly recommend rocksmith tho, great for beginners and has a bunch of tips and arcade games that you can play with your guitar, note, in order to play the game you have to have an electric guitar or a hybrid like me
