Ultra personal here: Alternative and herbal remedies may have legitimacy. If they can treat a condition, i feel that they are worth trying. The FDA runs a very usurious business in barring the way for these remedies from getting approval. Approval costs lots of money to get and should not get in the way of showing efficacy and improving the Quality of Life of patients who are in desperate need of relief that conventional medicine may be unable to provide.

By that logic we should let kids ride bikes without helmets because it would be cheaper to not but them.

I do not agree with your logic or your comparison. There is a clear safety issue with kids riding bikes without helmets and cost should not get in the way of that. Helmets are proven and effective. I would ask that you find a different comparison to make. What I am discussing with medicine is that there are issues in which conventional methods may not have a sufficient treatment. Alternative and Herbal medicine should come in and at least be permitted for testing and approval without a prohibitive cost. Truth be told, the FDA is being less stringent in its testing already.

All medicine is tested at an insanely high cost. Trials don't exactly pay for themselves and those alternative and herbal medicines actually need to prove that they are both safe and effective for their indication before they go on market just like any other drug that goes to FDA. There are herbals and alternative therapies used in western medicine but only because they actually have studies backing them. I'll grant you, it's not a whole lot but there are some. If it's an appropriate option, I recommend it to my patients but we all practice evidence based medicine so I'm gonna need evidence :/ I do agree that there are some drugs getting approved by FDA that I'm not super comfortable with *cough* andexanet *cough* but at least those have stipulations tagged on to their approval.

Yeah, st. johns wort is something I see a lot. Evidence has been kinda mixed on it. A study will show it does help, and then another says no. If it helps you, I don't see anything wrong with it, just make sure that you tell a provider that you're on it because man does it interact with everything -_-
