WEEABOO

Weeaboo's at what point is it to much? okay so I'm pro do what you love be what you want but as long as your not harming someone. i had this discussion with my niece, we went from chatting about a manga that we follow to having a deep conversation about the anime/manga community and a topic that is sensitive to some in the community. i try to keep an open mind to peoples choices, and life styles but at what point is it an extreme? I have a personal story to share about someone i dated back in high school. i met her in art class cause we had similar styles and later found out she was friends with my niece who i mentioned. we hit it off pretty great and all till she started to mention some pretty unlikely things about herself. things like she was born in japan and was half Japanese though she was strait up Hispanic and how she moved to the u.s as a child to live with her aunt and uncle though it was actually her birth parents and how she had relatives who worked for some Japanese animation studio. and would call her Japanese cousins speaking what seemed Japanese. any who we broke up but it wasn't till a couple years later when i asked my niece if she still knew her and asked how she was. maaaaan what she told me had creeped me out o~o turns out that my niece and her friends had unfriended her back in high school because she had multiple social media accounts pretending to be half Japanese guys, which she had successfully managed to catfish two of my nieces friends. they eventually caught on and dug up evidence on the things she had been lying about and never spoke to her again. i mean anime/manga are cool and all and its cool to appreciate other peoples cultures but it seems that some people in the anime/manga community take it to an unhealthy extreme level. btw this just my own personal opinion d: what do you guys think? what are your opinions on Weeaboos or the anime/manga community and such?

Weeaboo is someone who thinks they are Japanese right? The ones who disregard their own culture to do anime stuff? If so, then they are just disrespecting both their own cultures and Japanese culture by their own imaginative "anime" culture. But they are free to do that as long as they, as you said, don't harm anyone. Catfishing people sounds pretty harmful to me. So I would say that is going too far.

That is one heck of a story... Who knows what shady things she could've pulled off if you two were still dating. I agree with pocketto, it's unfortunate that there are some people who take things to the extreme, but as long as they aren't hurting others it's fine. I only consider WEEABOO's as the most extreme title for a social group when it comes to fandom meaning they completely try to live their life style in what is portrayed in the anime's or Japanese shows that they watch. Television is still a distortion of our reality, therefore what is portrayed in anime isn't necessarily 100% true to how Japanese people actually live. On a side note, I regret rejecting the Otaku girls that liked me because I just so happen to be an asian that likes anime. It's not that they were bad people or unattractive, I rejected them because I was arrogant to the extreme anime fandom persona that they held. I ended up doing more relational damage then their fandom persona could've ever done to me.

^ I disagree, an otaku are multiple things- there are "Old-Taku" who were around when anime first hit the US and enjoy the classics, then the casual otaku (me- I don't watch it as often as I used to do, but I watch enough to be a fan), and the regular otaku who love anime and it's there main hobby. Then the weeaboos honestly want to be Japanese but only because they have a delusional and uneducated view on the culture (all stemming from anime). They are too the extreme of the subject. Most weeaboo are preteens and young teens. However, there are plenty of older folk who live in a fantasy world. And @Pocketto, while it does seem harmless, us regular fans need to separate ourselves from them because if we associate with them, it makes us all look bad.

I think a weeaboo is someone who slips off reality, focusing on anime and japanese "culture" and only on that. I think its just the puberty version of an otaku.
