Sega has been in their "dark age" for a lot longer than they saw success. The original Sonic games gave Sega a huge boost in the early 90s, but by the mid 90s their management already started screwing up everything. They brought out the CD add-on, 32x, and the Saturn all within the span of about three years. They were effectively competing with themselves. That's one of the worst things you can do as a business. Then they came out with the Dreamcast very quickly after that. I liked Sonic Adventure, but that was the beginning of their stupid antics. Big the Cat?? Really? I really love those old Sonic games, but Sega is trash.

Either do more games like the original sonics, advance/rush, sonic adventure, or generations. That's when they got sonic right. I have no idea why they tried so many gimmicks.

Yes! More good old fashioned 2d sonic or sonic adventure. XD

They already "tried" making 2d Sonic games again and it didn't turn out so well. They were so lackadaisical in making those Sonic 4 games, it was a pathetic attempt.

Maybe there's still hope.

I hope they will release something good on PS4, yeah I haven't played any game after Sonic Generations. They should focus on making something that is not aimed at a younger audience.

The sonic franchise im afraid is trapped in a circle, Before we go into the present lets look at the past. The sonic games were segas attempt at trying to beat nintendos Mario. They tried going for a more edgy cool approach that they thought would give kids more incentive to buy sonic games. Of course most of us liked sonic back in the days it was pretty fun especially the first three games they released, sonic cd was good in itself as well, but after that things started shifting. You could say sonic 3d blast and sonic r were the start of the fall of sonic or that sonic spinball was/ eggmans mean bean machine however those were just small attempts at sega trying to create variety like Nintendo did with its Mario franchise. Or you could say that the systems were the main reason why sonic games just were not consistent. Since that was a difference between Mario and sonic, Mario did have multiple systems it starred on but they were implemented in a nice time frame whereas sonic was haphazardly thrown around on all sorts of them. I mean Sega CD, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Genesis, Sega Game gear, sega nomad, sega Saturn, and so forth. The sega dreamcast is where things actually started going bad at least after the first installment. Sonic Adventure was actually pretty decent for most if not good for those okay with some of the more slower paced areas at times. It was by all means a success and thereby fans enjoyed it. Now move to sonic adventure 2 and well things didn't go so well they did not have as much development time for the next installment there were far more camera issues and glitches. However most people beared with them. Then the worst happened though after its main 2 installments of sonic, sega stopped making systems and that's where we start the slow descent. Starting with sonic heroes sega was hard at work trying to cater to the base of fans it had grown in the sonic franchise, this was when xbox, gamecube and playstation 2 were out on the market. However due to apparently making the game cross platformed for all systems it had to use another engine renderware rather then its own engine which created a rather rushed game at the end and unpolished since the engine change took its toll, After that, though shadow the hedgehog was released and to say fans were mad was a understatement. To a lot of people this was seen as sonic trying to be cool rather then being cool as our nostalgia told us. The reality was though that we had basically reverted to wanting games that centered around the older style ones. Nostalgia pretty much from now on, you couldn't really satisfy the old school charm of the original sonic game because at that time we had grown older and expected new things yet wanted the old things. However the Gameboy advance games did provide a stroke of decent game quality That's when the series was pretty much broken quite a bit to many people who grew up with it. Still sega kept going and was determined to release better sonic games however most of those were met with dislike as well from fans of the series. At the start of the next generation ps3 and xbox 360 they planned to release a game however due to the new requirements for making it on the latest systems it was rushed as well. Sonic06 or sonic the hedgehog simply was what finally did it in. The game for the most part is hated amongst older sonic fans. The bugs and just everything else. It was the black sheep of sonic games for most. From there on any sonic game was pretty much bad to most older fans of the series besides a select few sonic generations was a nice touch though. Here we are at the present, we have some very high expectations of sonic now and days. Expectations that normally cant be met, Its also seems like its common tendency to blame the children for the newer games being bad but in reality we brought it on ourselves and sega as well as mentioned with its focus on creating so many systems in a competitive outlet under a short time for the most part as Dr Mario said. TLDR Time Management and Business Management on Segas part along with a cycle of expectations that cant be met anymore.
