Sword Art Online ripped it's core story and setting from .Hack//sign and fucked it up with its extremely rushed pacing. They should've made the series much longer to actually enjoy it. The 1st 1/2 of SAO was actually good, minus the rushing story, and I actually liked it. The problem with it is that they dropped the ball and just gave up at the end. The writers just stopped trying to make it interesting and focused on fighting scenes rather than plot. I LOVE fight scenes, but if I gotta watch hours of bullshit to get an ok animated fight scene it's not worth it. I don't deal with it.
Log Horizon also ripped from .hack but they decided to focus on story rather than fight scenes. The lack of fighting is probably what people bitch about when it comes to LH but the story is so complex and deep it shits all over SAO. If they could somehow combine LH's story and SAO fight scenes, you'd have one hell of an anime. But back to LH, LH is also a mystery because unlike SAO, you don't know HOW they got to the world, they just appeared. We don't know if it's the same thing as SAO where they put on some headgear and got trapped or there was some weird dimensional rift and threw people in the game or what. And that's why I continue to watch it. It's weird how no one knows how they got to the game but they're there and they cannot "die" and living in the game is what they have to adapt to or they need to find out how to GTFO

I feel like LH is for a more mature/patient fanbase

I think LH is better.... if u play MMOs u can easily see that LH makes much more sense and more MMO based than SAO... SAO shines in its art and sound butLH focuses more on strategy, story and character development..
Now let me ask u a question...
wat wud u do if u get trapped into a fantastic beautiful world of games.. of course if u are more of a gamer u wud logically choose to discover the world to play more and have some fun... rather than getiing out to face the boring reality again....
Hence LH speaks more about wat players will do if an actual apoclypse happened..
There is so much more on which i could praise LH but this shud be enough to convince a true OTAKU

I believe they both have their redeeming features, however, since they both have a different plot it really isn't fair to compare them. For example, SAO is all about getting trapped in a game an having to beat the game in order to leave the game while LH is about one day waking up trapped in a world based off a game they played in the real world and having to adapt to their new environment. I won't deny that SAO is broken in the fact that Kirito is portrayed as an all powerful character that gets all the gils (his harem, eh hmm) but the story line is still interesting.
Personally I like LH more for that fact that it has a more real life feel to it and it's easier to relate to. The best part is that Shiro can't do everything perfectly and he does tend to make mistakes a lot. Way better character layout than Kirito. The only thing I'm excitd about is which girl Shiro picks. I'm rooting for Akatsuki. If the author chooses to make him pick Minori instead I'll seriously be P.O.ed.

i love both shows but i love log horizon because if it telling a story and it characters L.H is telling a epic which remands me of a light novel im reading on wattpad called (the gray tower) great story by the way but i love SAO for what it is a fast pace action harem and i think it stupid that people are comparing them to each other because there game base anime we arnt comparing .hack to code lyoko or any other game genera to them

I agree to what most of whats being said comparing the two anime but if they took a little more time in SAO Aincrad arc it would blow L.H. out of the water but it didn't same for GGO arc those are the only two arcs worth mentioning IMO but either way i liked both of them all the same
But if i had to pick one of the worlds to be trapped in i'd pick SAO reason being it would be boring as hell being trapped in a re-skinned world we already live in with SAO it would be a high risk to high reward to see whats around the next corner/ floor

To start, I have a bias feeling about the 2 shows... I didn't like SAO as much so I won't be talking it up.
I feel that L.H has a lot more depth into the story line and character development although lacks fighting scenes. With the recent episodes coming out, i believe that the viewers are seeing a lot more potential for even a deeper story line. It also has a better MMO feel to it. A gamer can relate to L.H more than SAO.
I see SAO more as a drama/romance story than an adventure. At first, the show seem to have great potential but during the course of the 1st season it felt like the show was rushed. With that, the GGO was interesting and brought back fear of playing which made the show more intense but again that feeling was really show although the didn't feel rushed, but I would of like a longer story behind it.
In all, I am excited to watch both L.H and SAO next seasons. Both left the shows some where to go and can lead to a better series.

In terms of using a VRMMO as a base, Overlord takes the cake by far.
