You may encounter people who give you gifts. Japan is all about gift-giving. Bring some gifts from where you come from. Little things.
A lot of Japanese smoke so I brought Newports. I also brought many post cards of my city and knick-knacks as well as snacks like pringles, jelly belly, m&m's, nerds, nerds rope (This is a welcome gift in Europe, too!), pop tarts, etc. If you know a person very well, you could even bring a pair of Levi's jeans, or Sketchers. They are VERY hot commodities.
If you go to a temple to visit try not to dress like a slob. It's just respectful.
Wear comfortable shoes. You'll be walking a lot wherever you are. Make sure these comfortable shoes can be taken off when you go into houses etc.
Japan doesn't sell sticks of deodorant or allergy medicine very much so make sure to pack them as well if you use them.
Japanese restaurants aren't about customizing or substituting.
(Btw this is an AWFUL place to go for advice, honestly.)
Let me know where you plan to go and I can help you better.

Be prepared to feel the wrath of the bugs! Little homeless cockaroch or spider will come to vist you every now and then looking for love, shelter and food. <3

-DO NOT walk into a dojo with shoes. EVER.
-DO NOT walk into someone's house wearing shoes, either.
-DO NOT wear casual clothes to a temple. (Wait, that was already established, never mind.)
-DO NOT get lost. A nearly impossible request, but you can, and will if you aren't careful! So get a map, invest in a tour guide, learn to read signs in advance, make a friend who can speak English. Times like these, it's good to have "The Arm Buddy System". In other words: Grab a friend by the arm and never let go. It's dangerous out there!
-DO NOT talk about the Chinese there. The Japanese HATE them!
-DO NOT buy ANYTHING from a strange guy standing in an alleyway. I don't care if he can speak English, or looks like a nice guy! You will either get REALLY fried, or you may just die from a stab/gunshot wound. Then again, that should apply an any major city anywhere. Japan's cities are HUGE and SCARY but lovely, bright, and colorful. :)
-There's the railway, the subway, or the metro. I'd use these as sources of longer distance transportation when you go. Walking or taxi is not very fun or appealing when traveling great distances there.
-Take plenty of pictures and put them on here. (Pleeeease?! I wanna see!)It would be really awesome if you did! :3

For some reason Moose reminded me. There are a lot of places in Kyoto and some in other busy cities like Tokyo and Osaka that have a lot of Nigerians dressed in cool clothing and bars with beautiful ladies. They will try to lure you into their bars. This is their job.
This usually entails you having to pay quite a bit because cover is sometimes very high and also if it involves a hostess, her drink will cost a LOT.(and you MUST pay for her drink. you don't get a choice!) I suggest avoiding the areas these bars are in but if you do happen to pass through, beware!
