The great debate - Final Fantasy 6 vs Final Fantasy 7

metasynth21
Final Fantasy VII handz down...by a fuckin landslide. FF:VII has better battle mechanics...The Materia system is a much improved version of Espering bringing a sense of customation to the game, allowing elemental bonus damage as well as stat boost. I loved the aspect of stat penalties to strength when you over equip materia and with materia like 'Final Attack', you can do things you can't do in 6...like 'Quatra Magic' link to a summon...thus...Knights of the Round x4 at the cost of one casting. Oh yeah! The summons were way better and there were more of them. Final Fantasy VII was the very first FF game to take the story out of the medieval type dark ages and bring us an epic story in the modern era or future. You can't tell me that your first run inside the Mako Reaction didn't blow your fuckin' mind. It went beyond steampunk Magitek and made technology a more credible theme in RPG'z...and yeah...the SNES era of RPG'z was dope and an important time in history...but Final Fantasy VII opened the floodgates of damn good RPG'z for PS1...Legend of Dragoon, Xenogears, Wild Arms ect...and undeniably advanced the RPG'z genre into the mainstream...i respect FF:VI for what it is but IMO FF:6 is way more overrated than Final Fantasy VII...if you don't think that Final Fantasy VII is better than VI...itz probably because you weren't there to witness it's greatness when it was first released...Even SquareEnix admitz they haven't done a Final Fantasy that is better that Final Fantasy VII...

Youre delusional. The "materia" system was a more complex version of the job change system in ff5. on top of that, youre way off with the "medieval dark ages". Ff6 had nothing to do with any of the such. I recommend actually playing the game before judging it and saying which is better. You cant make a valid opinion without knowing both games. Your opinion is invalid. Also, z's are not s's. Just saying.

I've played and beat FF6...therefore my pointz of comparison are indeed vaild...lack of castleZ in FFVII...no full armor setZ in FFVII...(just bangleZ and accessorieZ)...time frame point being that FFVII put the player in the "Future" or "Modern Age"...yes, Magitek iZ the futuristic part of FF6...but your still in a 'sword and shield' era of time/setting/and equipable WPN'z...In FF7 only memberZ of 'Soilder' carried swordZ and your party memberZ each had their unique WPN...complex version of JOB system? Your thread iz about FF6 vZ FF7...what doeZ FF5 have to do with this beside it being a FF that iZ not even the subject of comparison? You can do way more with magic in FF7 than in FF6...that alone makeZ FFVII the better game...so yeah...try not to start a thread then attempt to alienate people when their opinionZ are different than yourz...FF6 iZ a solid RPG...but...the MECHANICZ of Fantasy Fantasy VII make it the better game...[I>M<O]...period. FF6 fanboyZ got their shimapan in a bunch becauZe Final Fantasy VII iZ not only the better game but got all the mainstream exposure FF6 never got Oh...and here iZ another "Z" riddened opinion that may pizz you off...Kefka may had been a soulless killer but he waZ a fuckin' idiot and a spaZZ...Sephiroth waZ a soulless killer and a heartless badaZZ...and no...that waZn't a rap line i made up...but if i wanted to make a song diZZing FF6...it would be a good way to start...I'm glad i have a life beyond the internet and that i'm not being graded on how i type in forumZ...juZt Zaying, of courZe...

You sound like an idiot, and I refuse to comment on your ignorance until you speak like a human being and not like some ghetto wannabe.

I was late playing both of them. I grew up about a generation behind in video games, and didn't get a hold of either game until I went from the 64 to the PS2. I actually played FFT and FFX before both of them as well. My insight may be a little unusual because of this. In playing FF7, I found the graphics great for their time, but in some places silly (namely the OW models). Actually several things seemed a little silly to me, like how they designed Barrett. He's like Mr T with a gun for an arm. I mean gun arms are cool, but they went right for the stereotype otherwise. Most of the characters were characterized well enough, but I didn't find myself emotionally invested in them. I wasn't sad when Aerith died. I actually laughed the first time I saw Zack in those flashbacks. I agreed wholeheartedly with Cloud when he said "This is stupid" as Zack ran across the screen. But still, it was a very fun game. Jenova was interesting, I liked how sinister it was in some places (like inside the Shinra building after Sephiroth did his business), and the battle mechanics were pretty fun (including the materia system). The difficulty seemed a little more casual overall, and the story was ok. By no stretch was it my favorite (it can't hold a candle to FFT), but not bad. I then played FF6 afterwards. Graphics-wise, I still have a thing for 2D sprites, especially when they are well done. FF6 didn't disappoint in this regard. You can't really make an apples to apples comparison of FF6 and FF7 graphics-wise. They were good in their own ways (except for the OW models in FF7). The story was pretty good in FF6, and it had some interesting themes. There was a larger cast of characters, and admittedly more I liked than in FF7. Terra was easier to empathize with than Cloud in my opinion. It also felt a bit more difficult in some places than FF7. One thing FF7 had on FF6 was the minigames. I was pleased with the little motorcycle minigame they incorporated into the story, and there was some depth to chocobo racing. Now speaking strictly of the lore, I came to appreciate FF7 a bit more with Zack's story in Crisis Core. Crisis Core felt like a much better game to me than FF7 (aside from the roulette system), with Zack being a far more likable and relatable character than Cloud. I feel that it really helped fill in FF7s universe a little better, and made Cloud a little more understandable (though only somewhat more likable). I think I enjoyed the setting of FF7 a little more too, though FF6 had that steam punk theme going on in places that was neat. Midgar is much more memorable for me. Looking at FF7 alone vs FF6, FF6 was admittedly the better RPG. I actually really hope they remake it in 3D on the PS4 or something, but even a remake for the Vita with the quality of Crisis Core would be awesome. Way more worth it than the FFX remake or a FF7 remake, especially after having played Dissidia and seeing Terra in 3D.

They did make 6 on the vita, I believe. The sprites a more cartoon like, but.. they're better than the ds sprites.

Ah I see that now. It kind of has that RPG Maker look to it. I feel like one of "those" guys in saying that I kind of prefer the old pixelated graphics. Pixels are sexy. I'd like to at least see the FF4 treatment for it. I'd say if FF4 deserved it, then FF6 does doubly so (not that I don't like FF4).
jikokun
Aye. If they going to do a 3d remake of 6, they need to do it right. Dont pull a windwaker and make me hate the game because its a cartoon now. :(

Actually, FF6 had more summons, coming in at 27 compared to ff7's 17. I'm only counting the originals, not the ones they added to the gba port of ff6 and not the ones they added to crisis core. Other than that, play on :p
