IS it worth going to art school?

squirrel_in_my_coffee
I have been attending an art school since 2004 working towards my bachelor's in Media Arts and Animation. I want to see how many others are going for an art degree and what benefits have they received from their education. And what faults are found at their schools.

I dunno, I'm strongly against art school, I don't know how they run those things and well I don't like to think that everyone comes out with the same basic understanding of "what is art." In my basic oppinion if you go down that route kudos if you like it, I do hear its harder to make it in the art world unless you went to one or are insanely talented.

I'm currently attending an art school myself. I'd say it might be a good idea if you want to go into an art career, that way it shows that you have some background knowledge with the arts. Plus, going into the art world...it might be best to have whatever you can. I'm only first year, but so far this is my opinion.

I hate to be "that guy," but I already am, so here we go. My friend in college studied for a degree in Fine Arts for five years. His teachers flat out told him that he will be living in failure with this degree. After college, he could only get temporary and part-time work. He then reapplied for a second major in Biology - Animal studies or something. He just graduated this spring. He's still looking for a job. My point being...well, I guess I don't have one. And, frankly, I think that is the point.

I'm currently attending the Art Institute(college) of New York and I'm already reaping it's never ending benefits. Web Design and Computer Engineering is my forte and I'm sticking to reaching both of my goals set in mind for the near future.

I think it depends highly on where you go and how invested in it you are. Look for a school with good placement amongst alumni and study hard. It's all about what you do with your degree-- think hard about the possibilities before committing to it, I'd say. As someone who is looking to attend art school myself, that's the best advice I can give. Aim as high as you can if you're going with art.

Does anybody have an opinion on School of Visual Arts, because I'm thinking of applying for the Fall semester.

It's worth it if you love it. If you expect to make tons of money, probably or not. Considering how art is subjective and there is no written "formula" for it, the future of an artist is hazy. However if it is your passion, do it. I majored in art for the wrong reason. It wasn't for me. But that doesn't mean there aren't others that are far more passionate and talented.

I agree with Nebs wholeheartedly. If it's your passion, and you thoroughly enjoy it then who cares if it's "worth" it?

@NujabesRIP Dude, you are so right. I'm thinking of going to art school and my mom doesn't believe in it, but what the hey, I'm gonna go for it.
