On June 1983, Keiichi Maebara moves with his family to Hinamizawa, a peaceful rural village. He quickly befriends his new schoolmates Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Satoko Hojo, and Rika Furude, usually spending their leisure time playing board games.

This sequel occurs a year after the original, and life at the Sakuraba Mansion passes more noisily and with more fun with the addition of Chika, a highschool student. However, despite such peaceful days, difficult times when Aoi, Kaoru, and Tina must each face their own various challenges were looming.

After losing a bet, Keichi, Mion, Rena, Satoko and Rika parade around the town in costumes. When they come to a fork in the road, they decide to go to Yagouchi, a nearby abandoned village.

The endless cycle of murders has been broken and Rika is finally able to settle down for a normal life with her friends. However, she is involved in a traffic accident and wakes up in a world where everything is different.

The story picks up after what happened in season one. Things that are left unexplained in the first season get explained in the new season in three separate arcs.
