Fun fact: Tomoko actually means "wise child" when translated. I found the opening of Watamote more indept than first glance as I was contemplating whether or not it serves the story for her to actually find genuine connections with others and ultimately let herself be vulnerable enough with others(and herself) to acknowledge it. Because the great tragedy in her character is that she sincerely wants to feel accepted but she perceives the world and those same people with preconceived negativities. Sort of ironic. I mean reading the manga she does seem to be getting a little better but hell if she herself sees it. Having said that, almost all of her hilarious antics and situations are the direct result of this ironic disconnect. Example being her consistently getting in spats with the "delinquent". It's kind of funny but also kind of sad. I like the series but you also wanna see this poor lonely little girl find happiness.
