A 煨桑炉 in a Tibetan Buddhist temple. Grandmothers put plants in them every morning. It was my first time to see this tradition...
Ghost @kuharido That must have been very nice to watch.

prayers flags where the prayers are written in Naxi hieroglyphs...Some Naxi people practice their traditional belief Dongba, some practice Tibetan Buddhism...One important ritual in Dongba is the ritual for the couples who killed themselves for love.
Ghost @kuharido Why do they kill themself for love?
Lishifu @hakutaku Because the relationship wasn't approved by parents. So they killed themselves to get access to the lovers' paradise mentioned in their scriptures. If they actually killed themselves, then family members from both sides would recognize the relationship, and let wizards hold the ritual to guide the souls of the couple to that paradise.
Ghost @kuharido It's so sad but also sweet (。T ω T。)

ʕʘ̅͜ʘ̅ʔI biked 100KM or so to explore folk beliefs of this region after reading a book that studies this region from an anthropological perspective...So many small temples, local grandmothers likes spending their afternoon in them.
Ghost @kuharido You're like an anthropologist yourself
Lishifu @hakutaku They live by the water so they worship water....water is associated with dragon in this culture...most temples have a dragon king or the serpent-slaying hero who got deified as the god of the lake.
Ghost @kuharido Ah, just like an anthropologist learning all about them

Maitreya will visit within at least 100000000 years. Maths of ancient India is very brilliant, I remember they have words for numbers that are "infinite".
Ghost @kuharido Yeah, Vedic mathematics are pretty cool. Maitreya will teach the Dharma when it's forgotten by everyone.

I also saw a small trumpet made from the shinbone of a woman who died during childbirth. The lama explained why shinbones of such women's can be made into this instrument: 1.The baby died before it came to this world -sin
2.The woman died a unnatural death-her overwhelming grudges
3. The unexpected death. What a misfortune to her family. Her family may have certain 业障/karma.
By donating her shinbone, the three can be resolved.
Lishifu @hakutaku This is highest level of donation. Only guru-level lamas can make this trumpet..
Ghost @kuharido That's good then. To clear the karma

I learned from the Tibetan driver that they willingly donate 1/3 of their yearly income to the Temple. It occurred to me the Church simply wanted 1/10, and people were done with it.
Lishifu @hakutaku Those Christian priests should have employed better ways to get money.
Lishifu @hakutaku Illiteracy is still something.
Ghost @kuharido The Tibetan culture was more unified. Supporting the temple was supporting everyone. The churches and communities in Europe/middle east are more split up so people didn't trust as easily.
Lishifu @hakutaku Even in the 21st century, many ordinary tibetans don't read the sacred texts/scriptures. Those are all explained by monks.
Ghost @kuharido Do the regular people chant sutras?
Lishifu @hakutaku just simplest 六字真言...Om...
Ghost @kuharido That's the vibration of the Universe. It's the first sound they hear in space
Ghost @kuharido One of my Yoga teachers told me that ( ´ ω ` )
