My two options were this and a vw passat, but the passat belt change is a huge pain, you have to take off most of the front end and it's also slightly more expensive.

Well that's a bummer, guess we Slavic bois don't have the privilege. From what I've heard the octavia has very easy maintinace and I'm 100% sure it's reliable since it's the vw 1.9 tdi.
