Elfen Lied is my favorite of all time but not for beginners or the younger ones. Death Note and Code Geass are good for most if you want adventure. Trigun and Rurouni Kenshin also very good. Fruits Basket is cute for the younger crowd. KissXsis for the older crowd who want something deliciously naughty (the OVA is just short of being a Hentai.) Right now I'm really enjoying Shakugan no Shana which is a supernatural adventure suitable for most ages.

A great classic Great teacher onizuka! trust its very funny! If you like robots then Full metal panic! it also has comedy and romance.. To gore hmm maybe Hellsing OVA if you like vampire >:D and Claymore should also but I have only read the manga but it has an anime. If you just want to be shocked then watch school days! (ﾟдﾟ)

Melody of Oblivion is a realy good anime, that and I think Bastard and the Ikkitousen series.

Elfin lied, history's strongest disciple, angel beats, beserker, samurai champloo, strike the blood, hxh, hajime no ippo, guilty crown, one piece(my all time favorite). Tenju tenge, durarara, baccano, neon genisis, gungrave, trigun. Those can keep ya busy.
