There is no such thing as love. Its a chemical reaction in your brain.

The same could be said for fear. But that doesn't make the emotion any less real to the person experiencing it.

Organisms first developed nervous systems for it being useful to their environment. To further support that claim, humans actually have two "brains". One inside our cranium, one along the tract of our guts. Even though they are both connected, if severed, the intestines can still continue to push food with soft muscles and "feel" noxious stimuli. It seems that it would be evident that along the course of life on earth, nervous systems were beneficial to eukaryotic, muilti-cellular life forms.
Emotions are not in sense without reason, it's just that life is pretty much about making more of it's self. So it has to have some form of motivation or "emotional", or it doesn't cope to it's environment and thrive.

@Elizabeth - cold, hard and logical. how sad those eyes must be...
Take that thought even further Amezuki; each person translates those feelings in a different way, but the chemical that creates those feelings remains unchanged.
SO....
The only constant is the chemical: The only factor between one person and the next is how they translate the feelings created by the chemical.
We are left back where we began. A word, which basically translates into an emotion which is beyond our control due to the fact it is dictated to us by a chemical reaction.
I cant wait to see that on next years Valentine's day cards......
So we have defined what "love" is, more or less, in a scientific nature. Kudos?!?
Lets get back to what it means to each person. I HIGHLY doubt every person who has commented on the chemical aspect here (aside from bio majors), was thinking "damn my brain is creating a lot of Oxytocin when I look at him/her".
...I could be wrong though.

True love is a choice to do something good for another person.
It can also mean an attachment to another person.
Many people mistake their feelings for love but i believe it is love to give someone food if they are hungry or give money to those who need it. Charity that can only be chosen. Love is a choice to do something good for another person.
I believe it is love to do only good things. Hug your baby when it is sad. Feed it and nurture it is a good thing but it is also good to hug your parture when they are sad as well as your friend. These good actions are the similarities that each one of our love ones should naturally achieve. This is why I think love is a choice to do something good for another human being.
You may feel different things for the homeless man you feed compared to your baby, but it is still the same action. An action of love.
So in a way I believe love is defined by the actions that are preformed by humans to other humans to help each other get to heaven (or for non religious people, to better ourselves for survival). Good pure actions are loving.
Then there is the love were you kiss one another and intertwine. I'd say it is a good thing because it is what we need to survive on this earth. That's why sex is good and love. We don't have other partners because it would mess with our emotions. In the long run it is a bad thing to lie and cheat that is why it is considered anything but love.
Devotion to another person is something I would say is a special kind of love. A love that you choose to nurture or destroy. A choice that can end up in termoil because of other bad choices or end up in happiness for both people because of good choices to love one another faithfully.
Devotion. faithfullness. Kindness. Patience. Forgiveness. Hope.
These are all good words I would say define what love is. They are also choices that only you can decide to be. (faithful, kind, forgiving. etc)
