I haven't really had any luck at all with the matches. They look like complete BS. The distance checking for matches is completely off. I'm in British Columbia, Canada and getting "nearest matches" spitting out what appears to be – and I mean "appears" because some of these "locations" are cryptic two or three letter codes that don't make any sense to the rest of the internet – people from Croatia, then Pennsylvania, then Australia, then the UK, and then Texas. As for my anime matches, collections of films get weighted too heavily over series. As a result my anime matches and best matches are dominated by people who simply also like Ghibli films – which is probably well over half of this entire website, who the hell DOESN'T like Ghibli films – rather than real matches who like Gintama, Nichijou, Kore wa Zombie desu-ka?, etc... The distance search doesn't even work at all in Canada. I know there aren't many Canadian users since there's no-one like Seph. promoting MaiOtaku at Canadian conventions. But know there still are some Canadian users on MaiOtaku whether active or not. So the search turning up absolutely no Canadian users when making searches for users in Canada or in Canadian provinces tells me the search is completely broken. I don't know what he's using to do so called distance calculations. But a better method would probably be using either Google Maps APIs or OpenStreetMap's api (plus maybe OpenLayers for display) to let the user enter a locality (City, etc...) and then grab the lat/lon for that and shove it into either PostGIS or Solr's LatLonType to do searches for people.
