You got me on "socially awkward". I go through so much suffering to get 'normal' women to even respond to me on regular dating site. Yeah, sorry I'm not going to the club with you then watching Grey's Anatomy afterwards: Girl, I got some Haganai to watch.

idk im a big anime fan but im in the Marines, in shape, decently social? i think my thing is that im too nice and that im not into all the same things everyone else around me is. im not into partying, drugs and etc. I just like watchin anime, playing video games and being without someone who makes me happy but generally the big sterotype i get is, oh you must be weird and have no friends or something

From what I understand being an Otaku in Japan is looked down upon and is commonly used as an insult. While here in America as most of us know an Otaku is just another breed of geek, and in this new decade being a geek is practically the norm pending on the region. I don't consider myself exclusively an Otaku. I enjoy comic books and anything in the Hero genre more than Anime/Manga. I do how ever constantly read more then 5-7 Manga at a time and watch short lived Anime quite frequently. I don't know about the stereotype though, anime has become so common now a days it's hard to tell who's into it and who isn't. I've had several teacher's and a Boss who where Die hard DBZ,Naruto,Cowboy Bebop, Big O and Inuyasha fans. Some of them even read the mangas. You'd never be able to tell they'd like anime without talking to them about it. The only person I know who lives up to the stereotype of a full blown Otaku is an ex friend of mine. He stays at home 99% of the time, has no job, watches only anime, reads only manga, only leaves his room to go to the bathroom or for an anime con. or sometimes to go play yugioh, he's about 22 and has an infinite amount of pimples, Eats only candy, pizza and what ever else he can have delivered to his house. For myself, 9/10 when you catch me watching TV I'll be watching cartoons. I don't eat sweets unless it's oatmeal raisin cookies. I don't have sex with inanimate objects only Women(But there was this one time at Band Camp XD). I love awkward moments they're funny, but I am a social person. I'm not really fat I weigh about 190lb(If that). I am a bit of a perv, I do enjoy Hentai, why lie I LOVE IT. I am a geek, I just believe the stereotypes have evolved since they began.

Hmm, reading your post Nerdalous, I am going to have to agree with all of what you said. Can't deny it.

Otaku still has a very bad social stigma in japan. My japanese professor would have to hold back a laugh when someone whould say otaku during class. Ita funny because a lot of the "american otaku" were wondering why she would be laughing at that.

hmm.. I guess I'm a bit of a stereo-typical otaku because I am kind of a dork. I've never tried pocky, but I don't really like most japanese food. I am a virgin and a bit of a weeabo though, but I'm not a perv and I don't do things with dolls..

I think Social Awkwardness is half-true to mostly true. Think about it, most people who say they are Otaku have some social awkwardness or inept thing going on. Granted we can be social but we do have our moments.

I don't think most people where I am know what an Otaku is, and if they do they are probably one themselves LOL Never had any issues related with being crazy about anime, people are more concerned about my sanity I think? I mean we are all a little crazy right? Or life would be so boring :P
