Pro Choice / Pro Life. Which is a deal breaker?

kitsunerena
I agree with Masuji. I don't believe abortion should be an alternate form of birth control, but it will happen when overall abortion is permitted for such reasons as stated.

I don't personally see how a pro-choice and a pro-life can be in a relationship, specifically a serious one where the possibility of kids is very likely. I mean unless all your children are meticulously planned out which doesn't always happen, that's a really really big problem that affects everyone. That's a problem where everyone needs to be on the same page and for as controversial as this issue is, it's something that can really make or break. Also thumbs up on the timing of this topic. Anniversary and all :)

I think this is something that you definitely MUST agree with in terms of tolerance/opinion with your partner. This is a different issue than say an atheist dating a religious churchgoer because while you can agree to respect your partner's religious views, you are both bound to whatever choice you make in terms of abortion. I actually didn't think much of it until recently, when my friend's brother got his girlfriend pregnant and pressured her to have an abortion by blatantly stating he's not willing to take care of a child. There actually is some truth to this since he's a complete deadbeat... After the abortion, the guy wanted to dump the girl because it's a "bad memory," but the girl never wanted an abortion to begin with, and is desperately trying to reconcile because she says there's no way she can date another man knowing she had an abortion with another man's child. This is kind of a reality check (even to myself) for people that think you can simply "respect your partner's opinion" on abortion. It sounds fine in theory, but when push comes to shove, someone WILL get hurt unless you both agree.

I guess I'll bite then. Last time I checked, it takes 2 people to make a child, not just yourself. The fact that you see the fetus only as an extension of your own body and not also your partner indicates to me that you're missing a huge chunk of the debate. You say "it's a matter of respecting your partner," and yet you completely alienate your partner's opinion. I guess this is more the reason to make sure your opinions on abortion are compatible with your partner before you start spooning.

^^I agree with that. I think abortion is such an situational choice that there's just no way to throw a blanket decision or law over it. I do think that males can have an opinion on it. Not to the point where they can go around changing laws out of ignorance, but in some situations it's not just the mother that's affected by the consequence of pregnancy
