That's kind of cruel to do something like that. Now that person's memory during Christmas eve Will always be tainted by an unhappy memory. Who ever that person is if they are someone close don't let them be alone. They need to be strong and have that fire of determination to overcome all. Don't let those who hurt you see you down. Go forward and move your life to the next phase is what I would say yo them.

Wow I'm sorry your friend had to experience that. Theres assholes everywhere in this world. My friend was dumped right in front of us on her birthday. She spent the whole day crying and I got suspended for hurting the douche.

While it's a horrible thing to be on the receiving end of such a break up, I think it's also important to look at it from both angles. If someone no longer wants to be in a relationship, why should they pretend otherwise? Why go through such a huge and important holiday with someone you don't get along with/no longer have feelings for/etc.? The timing is awful, but if one person in a relationship is unhappy, it's important to address it quickly rather than letting it fester.
