You should go during the off-season (late autumn and winter), too, since it will be cheaper. I went in the summer during Obon (the busiest traveling holiday of the year for the Japanese) so that I could take my cousin with me, and our round-trip plane tickets cost us $2000 each. If you go during less busy periods, you can get a ticket for $800-900.
Look into doing study programs, too, since this will usually go a long way towards making your living expenses more manageable. My cousin and I did a one month SILAC program at The Yamasa Institute -- Our tuition was about $1750 each and our room was about $800 for the entire month, which isn't so bad. Yamasa is a really good language school, too, and we made a lot of great friends from all over the world there ^^

While Egypt is first on my list of Travel, Japan is definitely second on my list. I do intend to apply to the JET program once I finish college with my bachelor's. If you're able to pass their application and interview process, you'll need to have a few thousand bucks to get started as a teacher over there, but it's a great opportunity to live and work in Japan and to study the language immersively. I'm currently aiming to become fluent in the language so that I can do well in day to day life over there.
Note: While you don't need to know Japanese to be accepted, it will really help.
