The Immigrate Caravan

neootaku
@ParadoxicalQ Mistake implies that both of these situations aren't plans that were cooked up in a dark room.

I'm surprised nobody notices a pattern here. Replace immigrate caravan with "Ebola Outbreak". Replace Ebola Outbreak with "Clinton Email Scandal." We see this sort of thing every October. They seem big and scary at the time, but the reality is far less dramatic than what they ramp it up to be. Why? The elections are around the corner. The republicans need to turn out voters. They pick one big, scary topic, make it way more than it actually is, make it the only thing the media outlets talk about for the month, and that's how they turn out voters. It is fear mongering. Plain and simple. And I bet you $100 USD that in two years time, that election will have its own crisis looming in the public consciousness. And it will be just as artificially ramped up as this topic is.

Chocopyro, You mean like how democrats bring up assault charges right before an election, that has near to no basis in proof? This isn't a republican only issue is my point. However, the fact remains, a few thousand Illegal Alien Caravan coming towards our border isn't exactly a minor issue, like many things could be argued, especially when some want to just let them in.
neootaku
@Chocopyro So you are saying that large numbers of illegals are not launching an invasion of the border right now?
chocopyro
@Leo: Yes, exactly like that. Republicans use fear, Democrats use outrage. I've been in the conspiracy circle for a long time now, I know the tools they use to keep us divided, and I know that traditionally when this sort of thing happens, its either a rally cry, or a smoke screen to cover up when a party doesn't want you to be talking about something else that they're doing. @Both: Hmm... Kinda reminds me of the german migration. Or the Irish migration. Or the... Eh, its just another migration wave. Its not our first, won't be our last. And I'd like to think America has learned a thing or two on how to handle them better at this point. This is a huge country. We have room for a thousand more people. Lots of empty space to place them. Even in crowded states like Ohio. Screen them, take those who could contribute to the work force, deny those who would pose a threat or be dead weight, split them into groups with their families (So that they don't destabilize anywhere they're placed), put them where they're needed, educate the kids, and let things sort themselves out. I've worked with many immigrants in my times working at the Gap distribution center, at Nifco, and at DK Manufacturing, and they've all pulled their weight. I think there's at least some among a group of a 1000 people who could do the same.

First off "Irish need not apply" was a meme of the time, the actual backlash from Irish immigration wasn't that bad. Secondly, Irish and South Americans aren't the same.
chocopyro
First of all, it's a meme by the anthropological/sociological definition of the word, not the post modern slang definition. And yeah, this is actually how people portrayed them at the time. This is real, this is damaging, and this is what bigotry looks like on paper. https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/98050/115662641.127/0_152730_fd3735b7_orig.png https://picturinghistory.gc.cuny.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/WildBeast-hires.png http://www.aoh61.com/images/ir_cartoons/catheman.jpg The actual backlash was pretty bad too, and we know this through reading obituaries at the time. Things only got better for them after irishmen managed to work up the ladder in the police force. We were... Much more violent towards our immigrants back in the day. The fear of "The other" is nothing new. So you're right, the Irish and South Americans totally are not the same. /sarcasm

No. It is a meme in the modern sense of the word. You can call it bigoted if you want, but that's your choice. I choose to see it in it's full historical context. A group of extremely homogeneous people with a talent to be violent drunkards start moving into your city. Why wouldn't they be racist against them? That being said this is all a tangent people like you like to throw out to absorb all arguments. "Oh well it's just like the Irish!", cant you be the least bit original? They are different from the Irish because the Irish are European, there is a common bond and homeland. South America is a mosh pit. And now they want to come and turn us into a mosh pit as well.

Daggerfella, can I get a link to your source there? I'm curious about something.
