The first wave did scare people but also, the fact that it wasn't just the elderly and obese that it was affecting. There were plenty of cases out there of younger people dying who didn't have any known co-morbidities. What people are talking about now is based on hindsight, but at the time, it was scary stuff.

@verucassault idk i wasnt panicking, maybe cuz i was in the desert worrying about being blown up by iran/terrorists who also didnt give a fuck about the virus. The country i was in did take the virus seriously tho. To the point they were racist against any asian looking person calling them out as chinese. It was weird af. But yeah that initial panic set the tone for today. Alot of people who didnt care at the beginning dont care now. Mainly those spring breakers who got 2 weeks off from college and went to party instead of quarantine.

NGL, it's still pretty scary. We went out to lunch a couple weeks ago and the couple behind us clearly had had the Rona at some point. Kept hearing this loud, dry, hollow cough coming from them. I had assumed it was the man who had the worse cough, but when they got up to leave it was this tiny woman who was making the sound. Didn't even look possible that she could produce such a deep, bassy cough. Maybe they weren't infectious but still I think if you're coughing constantly you should probably stay the fuck home just to be safe.

Well you know people usually are used to walking around when sick anyway. Isnt that how the flu and other sicknesses used to get around before?
hell_hound7
Wait wait wait, how does the flu get around? Like ik we have flu season but how does the first person who gets it ACTUALLY get it before they spread it around?

It's a viral infection, so you look to the birth of viruses. *Viruses might have come from broken pieces of genetic material inside early cells. These pieces were able to escape their original organism and infect another cell. In this way, they evolved into viruses. Modern-day retroviruses, like the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), work in much the same way. *Viruses may have arisen from mobile genetic elements that gained the ability to move between cells. They may be descendants of previously free-living organisms that adapted a parasitic replication strategy. Perhaps viruses existed before, and led to the evolution of, cellular life. *Viruses are ancient. Studies at the molecular level have revealed relationships between viruses infecting organisms from each of the three domains of life, suggesting viral proteins that pre-date the divergence of life and thus infecting the last universal common ancestor. *They existed 3.5 billion years before humans evolved on Earth. They're neither dead nor alive. Their genetic material is embedded in our own DNA, constituting close to 10% of the human genome.

All the things basically just spread, they also mutate. But still, not all viruses are comparibly the same. There are still things about COVID that make it much much worse than the common flu. I know a lot of people are comparing the death rates to COVID, but you typically don't get any sort of lasting effects after having the flu.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/in-depth/coronavirus-long-term-effects/art-20490351 Most people who have coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) recover completely within a few weeks. But some people — even those who had mild versions of the disease — continue to experience symptoms after their initial recovery. These people sometimes describe themselves as "long haulers" and the conditions have been called post-COVID-19 syndrome or "long COVID-19." Fatigue Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing Cough Joint pain Chest pain Memory, concentration or sleep problems Muscle pain or headache Fast or pounding heartbeat Loss of smell or taste Depression or anxiety Fever Dizziness when you stand Worsened symptoms after physical or mental activities **** The worse post COVID symptoms are organ damage to the lung, heart, kidneys, or brain, blood clots and vessel problems, and chronic fatigue and cognitive issues.
