It was quite frankly a scientifically illiterate statement. Melted icebergs that are already in the ocean do not cause sea levels to rise. As that sea ice is already in the ocean. But what about land ice? Greenland and Antarctica contain large land ice sheets. Those ice sheets are not in the ocean. The water contained in the large land ice sheets are not part of the ocean. When the avg global temperature rises. Those large land ice sheets melt and drain into the ocean. Hence more water is added into the ocean from the land ice sheets and global sea levels rises. Let me simplify it for your smooth brain. The water in the container represents the ocean. The clay represents land. The ice cubes represent the ice sheets on top of the land. What happens when the ice cubes melt? It raises the water level in the container. As the water from the ice cubes drains into the water below. Just as water from melted ice from land drains into the ocean. It's analogous to sea level rising.
