Sorry for necroposting, but I must point that leftist extremism (far-left) always goes back to Marx and Lenin.
After the French Revolution, the Bolshevik Revolution was the greatest of all (in terms of world impact) and changed the meaning of Leftism to mostly advocating for Socialism/Worker Rights/take down/regulate Capitalism or the current Social order in centuries XX/XXI. Try being a far-leftist nowadays while ignoring Marx and the Communist Manifesto. For Anarchism, Marx isn't the main thinker (Bakunin should be), but he does influence them. It is like advocating for Liberalism while saying the French Revolution was a complete disgrace to humanity.
They were the turning point that changed the Left forever.
Reminding the birth of Leftism and Rightism in the context of the French Revolution:
In the French Court, the groups who demanded Louis XVI to step out of governing France/abolish monarchy were situated in the left of the Court; while those who still wanted the monarchy to remain were in the right side of the Court. A crude explanation, yes. But this might be it.
NOTE: Remember I am using a two-sided compass (Left and Right) rather than a four-sided one (adding Authoritarian and Libertarian).
Of course, let us not generalize and treat all brands of Leftism being advocates of revolution. Although the concepts of 2nd/3rd wave feminism, LGBT rights, abortion and such were revolutionary by the time they were proposed ARE majorly supported by Leftists (Lib-Lefts and moderate Aut-Lefts) in general. They are supported by Libertarians, too, but in another, less empathetic way.
No one asked for that, but eh. I wanted to. I might be terribly wrong, too. This may also be biased, since I am a complete Rightist.

One of the examples that disconnects Libertarianism to the Left was Cuba. Che Guevara, a prominent figure in Cuban Revolution despised the LGBT because he viewed them as a "perversion of the bourgueoisie" and since Marxists despise the Bourgueoisie (they basically removed the power from nobility and placed to themselves via French Revolution), at the time of the Revolution, they were persecuted.
I don't really know Cuba's situation with the LGBT TODAY.
Being homophobic and reactionary aren't a thing exclusive in the Right and Conservatives, you know... although it is majoritarian, because Aut-Left groups are marginal outside Latin America.

A fun (and last) thing. Here in Brazil there was a discussion whether Nazism was Right (which IT DEFINITELY IS) or Left (due to its harsh opposition to the Liberal western world). OUR FUCKING PRESIDENT claims Nazis were leftist due to their brief alliance with the Soviet Union during WWII.
Of course, I won't go all intellectual here. During 2016-middle 2019, I believed Nazism and Fascism were Left-wing.
Yes. I was a brainlet.
