Japan is very prestigious when it comes to education 6th grade over there would be an American 8th grade education. You need top marks in college and specializing in something useful to the career you want doesnt hurt either.
Like everyone has said already, learn Japanese. I can't stress this enough. Companies/Businesses Hiring wont even breath in your direction if you cant speak it. Learn how to write it to. It is 99.999999% chance that you will need to write in Japanese for your career.
Also please look into the culture and respect their ways of life and their country laws. The way they act in work and public environments is completely different to America.
Also do expect a little discrimination at first. People will see you as a foreigner at first, show them what you can give them, that you can be an asset there.
As to why I may be advising these things? My parents were military and it just so happens we were stationed in Japan for around 4-ish years. I've experienced the culture first hand while young, introduced to anime, their festivities, history, cities, economy etc. It is unique just like every other country out their and they have their own way of doing things. So research, study, and prepare. And soon you'll find all your work paying off and being in the place you want to be in. :)

I'm in getting my Associates in Japanese, then transferring from a Community College to Michigan State University for the next 3 years. And after I complete Journalism, Japanese, Photography, and Creative Writing I plan on moving into a District in Tokyo and studying to get into Tokyo University. < Run on sentence lol, too tired to type properly xD And attempt to get an Internship at one of Jump Magazines branches >.< Even if I get turned down by a few I plan on being persistent, I honestly don't care if I fetch snacks or water, but I want to be in that environment. All in all the sacrifices I've decided to put down reign pretty heavy. It may sound kind of weird but I stopped with relationships, since the girls I end up liking usually I end up never speaking to again or vise-versa. So for the next 4-5 years I'm not dating anyone and I'm focusing solely on my studies to make my goals come true and become a published Mangaka in Japan and one day get my own Anime. It may sound ignorant but honestly there isn't a girl in the entire world (Nor any amount of Love) that will change my mind about moving overseas, and that's what I've spent the last 2 years achieving.

Before moving to Japan. Understand that their culture is completely different. They have indeed become more westernized, but their work ethic is exteremly strict. A lot of Americans have a tough time adjusting to this mindset. If you already have a tough time being accountable in school or your job, then you will have an extremely difficult time. I was born in Osaka Japan, and have lived in both America and several European countries ( and Canada) I'm quite familiar with how Japabese and Eastern culture in general can be quite diffrent, and am only saying this, so that you guys can both prepare yourself abd be aware of what living in Japan is really like.

Be prepared to get really sick. They have certain diseases and illnesses over there that may be common to them but Americans may not be used to at all. I have also heard that convinence stores are kick ass in Japan~

Don't freeze in the winter. No such things as centralized heating or A/C unless you're super super rich.

I would really recommend NOT going to live in Japan. Or any place that has hospitals closed on nights and weekends for that matter.
But visiting could be quite fun. ^^

Well, I'm sure they still have emergency clinics open 24/7. That's what it's like in taiwan. The hospitals close on like Sundays but the E.R is still running all the time. I think what a lot of people don't realize when they want to move to another country for certain reasons is just how much all those reasons will still follow you. Like people who want to move to australia/canada if the affordable healthcare act passed not realizing that those countries have federal healthcare or like when anime fans think that japan will be more accommodating of their anime fanaticism. Which P.S, not so much. Tokyo's governor is infamous for trying to label a number of anime/manga as harmful publications and thus restrict the sale of such titles. When a bunch of publishers boycotted the anime expo in Tokyo and tried to have another one that got cancelled because of the earthquake to which the governor stated that they deserved it.
