Should I try quitting my medication?
CODBO2RGM2 @codbo2rgm2
I have been diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, and social anxiety at a very early stage. I was put on medication to help keep me calm, focused, and in control. Upon looking at the Autistic serious talk thread and looking at a post a friend of mine posted (username starts with bashful, sorry I can't get your full user ;-;) it got me thinking about whether or not I should continue my medication. I mean my friend in real life Tristan managed to cut the medication down a lot. I've been on the medication all my life and I have gotten to the point where I use my medication wrong. Now, before you think I use it to end my life, let me clarify I take a pill at noon that extends my focusing the rest of the day. I only take one at night here and there to pull an all-nighter of being on the computer and such. My first forum post under this area I described my problems with me. So, I am debating whether or not I should cut the medication and learn to handle and control myself the old fashioned way. I have a feeling it'll bring a few problems up, but I am also feeling like it'll bring more good to my own self I alwas struggle with. So, I must ask, should I say goodbye to my medication or should I stick to it?

I respect that and I was talking it over with my guardians. I don't think I am cutting every medication I got, just the ones that help me focus. I'll most likely still be on my anti-depressant but drop my focusing medication

---Autism is a Spectrum---
https://66.media.tumblr.com/39f70797c970f927db258cb9d04a5e56/tumblr_inline_o27d6oM6d11qkdx2t_500.gif
I can't really define Autism as a single entity, it's so ridiculously vast.
My dear honest general feelings on the topic, is pretty much abnormal social behaviors.
---Does it Matter---
The thing is, does it even matter? It's not like it makes us vastly inferior to others, just because we can't socialize in IRL to a old social structure. We live in a modern age that's purely behind monitor screens now. I feel like having a copybook on socialization, is outdated and prejudice.
>Judge the man of his feats, not how he behaves.<
---Autism Diagnose -VS- Me---
Social interaction and communication challenges. -VS- People suck, and wildly difficult to comprehend.
Sensory issues. -VS- I can't pick up social cues as a logical format (incredibly uncomforting), so I guess its a "sensory issue".
Repetitive behaviors. -VS- What's wrong with being repetitive, isn't that the best possible behavior of a working man? Routine is bliss for me. I can be able to predict, the dangerously unpredictable.
Restricted interests. -VS- Is there anything wrong with me, for being overly passionate on certain subjects? Yet be uninterested in other subjects, because I find them boring?
---Refusing Medication---
Meds don't properly hit autism, for a good 80% of the time. It's so vast for everyone. I feel like its just a drug that removes your own will to control your autism. Making you worse, then who you were originally. I couldn't conduct my feelings accordingly, because the pill would tell me not too. That's one stupid pill. It honestly feels like the personality remover pills, it should not be called a autism meds. If your strong enough, I highly recommend you to just accept for who you are.
>Live to coop with autism, not to remove it.<
---Final Notes---
So in the end, all of these paragraphs are counter productive. Autism shouldn't be a diagnoses, it's a different way of living. Especially compared to those toxic words of "being normal".
My quote: There is no such thing as "being normal" in my eyes, there is just "being you".

So enjoy yourself.
Don't let others, tell you something different.
Enjoying yourself, is the biggest middle finger of them all!

I just reposted this, for you to have a second look.
Autism can be enjoyed medication-less, It'll just takes a lot of self control. If you think your ready try it out.
How I'd survive 7 years without it, is by a lot of self reflection like...
-I'm I too bombastic atm?
-How many people I possible hurt today, how can I fix it?
-Do I need to go back to the pill? Draw a cons and pros chart. So you can see it everyday.
-Am I more depressed without the meds with it? Is a super important one to evaluate.
-Etc.

If you stop taking any benzodiazepine medicine, commonly used for calming purposes, you could end up with a seizure, coma or death, Any drug that interacts with your GABA receptors all carry this risk to varying degrees.
You should google the names of the medicine and find out if they are of the benzodiazepine class.
If you're on these, you'll want your current dosage of medicine to be converted to Diazepam (used for withdrawal due to its long half life) and it should be steadily reduced.
For anti-psychotic medicine (resperidone, olanzapine ect.) these can usually be stopped without any serious side effects most of the time, but it's best you schedule an appointment with your doctor to discuss a tapering system for ANY medicine you decide to stop to minimise risk and discomfort.
Finally I need to add for safety reasons, Advice from a stranger online is not a substitute for a doctors consultation, Don't self medicate, you could cause harm on yourself.
If you want more detailed descriptions on the pharmacokinetics or pharmacodynamics of any medicine, you can message me if its for research purposes.

Definitely talk to your doctor about it. The doctor who prescribed your meds knows why they put you on such and such and will be able to help you either deal with any side effects that come up or with any tapering that you need. Also if you want to start herbal supplements cause there could be drug-drug interactions. There isn't a specific drug that manages autism in its entirety. There are some medications that can help with certain symptoms of autism but many are used off-label and milage varies based on your own experiences. We just don't know enough about the specific pathology that produces the core symptoms of autism.
In regards to asking medical advice, while there are some medical professionals on here, please note that we're not your provider and thus we don't have a full picture of you. Whatever advice is just for education purposes only. Don't do anything without talking to your doctor.
Lol, can't have y'all coming for my lisceeeense :p

Yeah, just go and talk frankly about which medication(s) you feel you're at a potential for abusing and what you're feeling and if that has anything to do with any of the medications you're taking. It could be that they can discontinue some meds or substitute with another drug that can work better or just reducing the dose.
It sounds like your ADHD medication is what you're talking about due to the comment about focusing and whatnot so I'm going to go with that. If it's ADHD some people do grow out of using their ADHD meds, but that's usually decided by how symptom-free you've been on your current regimen and for how long If all is well, they can set up a drug holiday and go from there. They can ask you questions and determine how successful you'll be should you want to discontinue.
