Question: why do colleges tolerate fraternities?
It seems like there are countless stories involving racist or sexist remarks. Not only that, but some frats even practice "hogging", which involves targeting overweight women with low self-esteem for sexual activities.

Because realistically they aren't breaking any sort of law. While personally I've never heard of Racist remarks from them, any individual can make them and most individuals that are Legitimately racist tend to group up(if it's actually racism and not jokes.), Whether they be racist against blacks, whites, ect. Sexist remarks are in the same boat, If they're actually sexist, and not either humorously motivated, or a piece of knowledge someone may think is sexist but not be, the end is the same as the racists. Sexist people will flock towards those with similar philosophy. Human nature.
While hogging, sexism, and racism aren't nice, They aren't illegal in any fashion. They may not be nice, none of it is against the law.
There will always be jerks, and groups of jerks. Banning Fraternities won't stop it. And they shouldn't to begin with, because that would be taking away Freedom of Speech, even if we don't like what they're saying.

I'll admit, you got a point Leo. But at the same time, it seems to create quite a bit of controversy, to the point to where the school's reputation can be damaged.
Also, here's a couple links on the topic of fraternity racism.

Because like most things, I feel the fear of frats, especially by the SJW-Left is another example of a moral panic with a few notorious examples ruining the positive impression of most. Like what Dagerfella is alluding to, I feel as if most if not all frats are a product of the campus-culture on which they reside. If your college or uni is a "party school" then expect the frats to composed of obnoxious, Heinekens binge-drinking dude-bros and fuckboys. However, if your college or uni is not a "party school" and whose student body is composed of people looking to be professionals, then expect the frats to be composed of people who are better than dude-bros or fuckboys. I went to a business school that was not a party school and we had 2 frats on our campus, and no one had anything bad to say about them.

... Well, I'm in a Fraternity, but I don't think my professional school frats are the same ones you're discussing hahaha
But the networking is nice, especially since all industries are pretty much who now what you know. I don't know how undergrad Greek organizations are like but we hold regional conferences that also help serve as like advertisement for the colleges as well, so that's potentially why colleges would like them on campus
