Relationships and Politics

crossbones
Leo The Wolf, If the person I am in a relationship with is somewhat racist or have such negative view about a specific race even my own, I honestly wouldn't mind. The reason is because the beauty of the 1st Amendment. They are free to dislike or even hate a specific race or person. At least, to me. The only thing I wouldn't tolerate is if they do anything physical in regards to their views such as spitting, pushing, etc, while spouting such things. I have a very negative view against Blacks and Mexicans and openly express about it but I also am aware that there's plenty who are not the same such having a victimhood mentality for example. Anyone can call me any racial/offensive slurs and I won't care. The only time it's a problem is when it's physical. Even business could refuse service to me because of my race and I wouldn't care. I'll just go elsewhere which may end up being better. As for limiting my speech in the relationship, I will still speak as I wish even if they threatened to leave. If they want to leave because I wouldn't 'obey', then it's on them. I value my self-worth and wouldn't lower it for anyone. Sure the things I wrote here may seems ignorant but that's just how I see things in today's time. I'm actually a 'minority' and currently in a relationship with someone who's white so this was an interesting question for me. My partner says racial slurs to me a few times and I say such things back. We're still happy with each other and don't let such nonsense like this get between us. We disagree a lot. We're literally the polar opposite of each other but we set it aside in the end. For example, they are for 'Planned Parenthood' but I am against it. We express to each other why but eventually narrow down to a point where we both agreed on certain parts.

SailingTeacup, ENFJ actually. I wasn't saying you were close minded, I said that not dating someone for agreeing with someone else, without knowing the reason behind it, Is a close minded act. Same goes for anyone else who agrees with Hillary ect. Trailer park was my home for fourteen years, so I wouldn't say I was wealthy. And no, they didn't, My father worked two jobs, my mother went to college and got a good one. Social programs should exist, but the way they do now isn't effective in my opinion. That said, Not really trying to get into my personal points of view into this topic. More so discuss the ideas and opinions of how it affects dating. I am indeed 20, great observation XD. Never said differently, But Experience isn't strictly based around age either. I don't discuss to be proven right, I discuss to be hopefully, proven wrong. It's a way of self improvement I live by.

Crossbones While I agree that people should have the right to have negative opinions, the right to be able to do so wouldn't be correct. And I more so meant that if that's what they wanted the government to go by, Hindering freedom of speech and such, like The one Canada did the past year or two ago. However you've made your point, that you don't truly care about the political affiliations that much at all. Which is a fair point of view. Hope your relationship goes well. In my opinion, that's how everyone should discuss things, Trying to find a point where you we all can agree on things and understand one another better.

Leo The Wolf, Thanks for giving an interesting question and thank you for the comment. It may seem wrong to have negative views but as long they aren't forcing it down or do anything physical, I personally don't see a problem but I do understand what you mean. Free speech is a human right which is why I heavily support it even if there are negative backlash. The problem today with debates and politics is most are trying to escalate the issue than it already is rather than de-escalate by trying to find an even platform through communication. Funny thing is, I'm kinda a Trump supporter and my partner isn't. They despise Trump but that still doesn't get in the way. Just mentioned it because I saw Trump's name being mentioned in previous posts.

Negative views aren't inherently wrong, it's all about Why people have them, like I said. Even passionate ones, it all depends on why, and what you do with them. Or at least, that's how I think of them. Overall, I agree with you. FS is a human right. Nowadays people are thinking with an Us vs Them, mentality, and either believing that conservatives are evil, or democrats are mindless. Neither is a healthy viewpoint, and it only causes more problems rather than helping us find solutions.(A good example is planned parenthood, One side says the other hates woman, while the other says they hate children, coming from a more pro-lifer myself. Neither helps the other understand) I'm not for Trump specifically, he seems too immature for my tastes. However I can see many of his policies that have helped the country aswell, and he's not the satan that a large percentage of the media tries to portray him as. Though to stay on topic, How does your discussion with your SO go when talking about things like Trump then?
crossbones
Leo The Wolf, The discussion goes smoothly usually though at times it can get a little bit complexed depending on what's going on with Trump.

Neo Nazi: Can't relate, would have many compatibility problems. Communist: lol, Humans can't make that work yet. Stupid finite resources getting in the way. Socialist: What kind? >_> Capitalist: What... kind? <_<; There are certain political schools of thought that I think would get in the way, but merely being republican or moderate wouldn't break the deal for me. The country has survived with a (Sort of) two party system for a long time now. I think a single household could survive like that.

Choco, Well to be fair, the country may of survived it but it's not exactly in the shape that you'd want your relationship to be in XD. However, hopefully those that date people with different views do better than we as a country treat each other.

I don't need to agree politically, but I would struggle to connect with someone who is an extremist (from the left or right).

So long as we can have meaningful discussions about it, I'm generally ok. I do have hard stops, which seems to come up more during national discussions now that the political landscape is trending more away from center, that would just turn me super off a person and would be hard to ignore
