Ok so the problem with the Balkans is... That it's had so many owners over the centuries that most of the cultures there, while descending from the same Slavs that were pushed west by the Huns on the late 4th century - early 5th century, have so many small differences that it makes them clash, because they cannot be contained as a single country-existence (hence why Yugoslavia died)
The Balkans territory was originally populated by Romans, they, were mostly annihilated by riders from the East, the scourge of God (Attila the hun) and nomad tribes escaping from them (ostrogoths, Visigoths, Slavs) some groups settled their roots on the Roman ruins in the region, others pushed west towards Rome.
Centuries later, the Balkans suffered greatly from excessive immigration and a cultural complex, too many tribes of too many origins with only few things in common, that they were refugees and that they needed to survive, thus, the people tolerated each other out of a common objective but believed firmly on their superiority.
This was further aggravated when the Ottomans tried to conquer the lands relentlessly.
Centuries of Ottoman rule shaped the people and territories, they transformed once more due to their rulers but kept most of their traditions.
After the Ottomans, Nations were formed based on their interests, later on, Yugoslavia was formed, then it got crushed, because surprise surprise... Having a country with no clear "main race, main language, main culture" lead to extremism among the different parties involved, which proved too difficult to handle, thus, they opted to abolish it and return the former lands.
Serbia has always been the treacherous boy among the Balkans countries, it sold off their neighbors to the Ottomans in exchange of preferential treatment, they also rejected negotiations with the separation movement of Kosovo, thus, Kosovo answered with the KLA, which, by all reasons, it's a terrorist organization which committed war crimes.
No one is absolved in the Balkans, everyone there has dirt on one another... There's a reason why they hate each other but band up together when external Nations menace their sovereignty
