Sharing ideas for a game I wanna work on

klausiboy
Hey everybody, I wanted to talk about a game I want to make, and I don't really know any other good places to share ideas. I know that this looks like shameless self promoting, but honestly, I really doubt that I will ever manage to finish my game, so this is more going to be me sharing my ideas, hoping that some other game enthusiasts will enjoy it as well :D I don't know how many letters one single of these paragraphs can hold, so I'll save the actual sharing for the next post

Okay, so the game is supposed to be a turnbased strategy game, kind of like in the same genre as Final Fantasy tactics, or actually maybe more like the combat system of P&P Dungeons and Dragons. It is, however going to be a lot like pokemon as well. Also, I'll say it now, my game is heavily inspired by the game "Pokemon tabletop adventures", and some of the mechanics are literally the same. You see, you have to types of units, a human unit, who can do a wide variety of things depending on his class, and then one or more monster units you control as well. The human unit has a base class and other secondary classes that he can switch between. The main class allows him to capture monsters among other things. As the base class levels up, the human unit will unlock slots for more secondary classes along with a lot of other utility abilities like using multiple monsters at once. Depending on the secondary class, the human will be able to fight on the frontline alongside his monster, do special boosts that help his monster, boost items, boost capturing and so on and on. The different secondary classes can to some degree be mixed to allow for a more customizable playstyle. The monsters, like you would expect from a pokemon-like game, can use an attack on their turn. In addition, they can of course also move around the battlefield, and different monsters are more suited for some terrains than others. Some of the monsters will have abilities they can use to change the battlefield instead of attacking, like freezing a lake and so on. Just like a pokemon game, the monsters in my game are supposed to be able to evolve. But instead of having one evolution line, each monster can evolve to three different monsters on average. And they can also revert back to a lesser form. So in theory, one monster can become any monster, since it can kind off zig-zag between evolutions. Both the monsters and human can level up to increase their stats. When a monster or human level up, they gain a stat point that the player can put in any stat he wants, with some restrictions. For the human, the stat point goes into the class you leveled up. Which means, if you switch the class, you temporarily lose the level and the stat gain. For monsters you can put the point in whatever stat you want, as long as you follow one single rule. The order of the stats must always be the same as the base stats, which means that if attack was the monsters highest base stat, then it always has to be the highest. And if defense is second highest in base, then it must always be second highest (or highest tied with the actual highest stat). Now, the different evolution possibilities depends on what your monsters stats are. And, if you want to revert to a lower evolution, your stats or level can't be too high. Therefore, you can choose to lose XP in battles instead of gaining XP so you can level your monster down allowing it to go into another evolutionline. (Or you could just catch a monster from the other line, which I expect most would do, since it will probably be easier. Kinda depends on how I design the trainer classes tbh). There are some more game-mechanics ideas in my head, but this is practically the rough ideas right now for the core game

Now, that up there was about the gameplay, the next part is going to be about the setting/story/lore/whatever you wanna call it. The world is filled with monsters and humans (which you probably already guessed) The monsters are beings of pure magical energy without any souls. They spawned from nature, because when The Maker (The game's God) created the world he did so with so much enthusiasm that all he created was overflowing with his magical energy. At first there was no sentient life in his world. He had simply not learned to create that yet. So, satisfied with his work he left this world for a long time. Over the millennia the magical energy in everything flowed out and condensed into sentient beings. These beings are referred to as "Ferals". When the maker returned to see how his world was doing he saw these soul-less beings wandering around without purpose. Some docile, others rampant in rage and destruction. The Maker was not satisfied with seeing how things were, but he felt like he couldn't destroy them either. After all, they had done nothing wrong, so they didn't deserve that (Also, he's called "the maker", not the destroyer xD). Instead, having gained new knowledge and skill throughout the years he crafted humans in his image with their own souls. He tasked them to share their soul with the ferals, so they would no longer live a meaningless existence. To do so, he also gifted the humans with a tool, the crystals. The crystals act as a bridge between a humans soul, and the magical particles in the world around them. It allows humans with a strong soul to do stuff like conjure fire, enhance their physical attributes or even enhance their natural charm. But most importantly, Anchor Crystals (think pokeballs) can be used to absorb the magical particles that the ferals consist of and remake the feral into a Creature with part of it's masters soul. It also allows for the Creature to grow stronger and evolve through the masters soul. And so, humans set forth with the noble task of sharing their soul with the world and the ferals. Humanity thrived, and now live in a society with both magic and technology. There are still ferals around of course, new ferals are even continously born from nature, or from the ferals breeding like any living being would. But all in all, humanity thrives. Humanity is, however, divided into three different factions with three different ideals: The religious faction, who dedicates their time and energy to understanding the will of The Maker and carrying out his word (pretty standard). These guys believe that technology is blasphemy and a sin. Afterall, why would we spend energy thinking up inventions when The Maker already gifted us all we need. The sorcerers' faction, who believe that the teachings of religion only limits humanity's potential. They dedicate themselves to study the true power of magical particals and how to use them. The mechanical faction, who believes that relying on magical particles and souls is an outdated concept. With steam and coal they can accomplish just as much as any of the other factions without needing to train at all. As you can see, each of the factions has a faction they particularly dislike. I'm not really sure how this plays into the game mechanics yet, but I'll think more about it later.

Now, I do have more ideas for the story, but these are more for the actual storyline of the game, where the above was more of a background story for the world. That means that the rest contains spoilers and plot twists, so I'm gonna save that for later xD
