As far as guns are concerned, the reason that Americans are so in love with them is that we greatly fear our own government. Not the government that it is today, but the government that it may at some time try to become. That has everything to do with us being rooted in our very foundation through the American revolution. The American ideal is that the government should be a weaker entity than the people that it governs. As for news sources, you can't just say "X is untrustworthy" and "confirm" that all of their information is false. Most news sources might be opinion shows these days, but they still report events. Imagine if you didn't believe the Las Vegas shooting happened because someone told you they heard about it on CNN, that would sound pretty dumb of yourself wouldn't it? As far as our politics are concerned, our two major political parties aren't that different in the grand scheme of things. By that I mean we're still arguing capitalism vs. capitalism. When you introduce the Libertarian and Green parties it's still all capitalism. Last election we had a socialist run under the democratic party, which was probably the furthest we've gone against capitalism in a long time. So the most polarizing thing is the team mentality. "I'm on team red and you're on team blue, so I basically have to crush you."
